LOGODI presents Global Leaders Program as international case study

Wednesday, July 25, 2018

LIMA – Choi Myungkyu, Director General for Planning at LOGODI, delivered a presentation on the institution’s Global Leaders Program today at the 2018 IASIA-LAGPA Joint Conference in Lima.

The talk responded to the question, “How Do We Train Local Government Officials in the Globalization Era?” taking the Korean case of LOGODI’s Global Leaders Program as a possible model for global leadership training in other countries. It explained the context behind the program’s conception in response to increased international exchange by local governments in Korea, and outlined the program’s development throughout its pilot phase since its launch in 2016.

In his overview, Mr. Choi shed light on a selection of innovations featured in the program to foster creative and capable leaders in the globalization of local administration, such as its “mini-programs,” job shadowing activities in the US, and self-directed policy study. He also touched on the demographics of participants over the past three years, which demonstrate an overall consistency in meeting such standards as nationwide representation and gender balance.

In analyzing the interim results from carrying out the program thus far, Mr. Choi expressed LOGODI’s encouragement from the positive feedback received from participants and the later assignments of alumni as international coordinators for their local governments. Concurrently, he considered strategies for its further improvement, expanded cooperation with partner institutions, and closer exchange between officials and their counterparts around the world.

The presentation at the conference on the theme of “Globalization, Territories and Integration” is LOGODI’s first at an event hosted by an international organization in which it is a member. LOGODI’s membership with the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA), headquartered in Brussels, was established in 1984. It is also a member of United Cities and Local Governments (1981) and the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration (2006).
