Korean central and local governments pave road ahead for international exchange

INCHEON – Korea’s central and local governments convened over a two-day conference to discuss the former’s support for the latter in their exchanges with other countries.
On Thursday and Friday in Songdo International Business District, the “2nd Central-Local Policy Meeting on International Exchange” brought together LOGODI’s Director for International Training & Cooperation, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS)’s Director General for Local Administration, the Head of the UN Project Office on Governance (UNPOG), representatives from the 17 metropolitan and provincial governments across Korea, and others, to consider ways in which central and local government can cooperate to energize international exchange at the local level.
LOGODI took the opportunity on this occasion to present itself and an overview of its international training programs, partnerships with local institutions, and its plans for the way ahead.
In addition, MOIS led a debate on the enactment of a law to support in the internationalization of local governments, while UNPOG stressed the importance of such support toward achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Localities represented at the forum such as Seoul, Incheon, Suwon, and Jeju, as well as the Association of North East Asia Regional Governments (NEAR), introduced a series of their own experiences with overseas counterparts to serve as models for consideration.
The meeting concluded with the expressed intent of local governments and international organizations to further build on their networks, while relying on the assurance of LOGODI’s support through its related programs and seminars.
