Tanzanian officials arrive in Korea for program on leadership management

Monday, September 10, 2018

SEOUL – Ten officials from Tanzania’s central and local governments have arrived in Korea, and this morning commenced a program focused on leadership management at an opening ceremony hosted by LOGODI.

The “Capacity Building Program on Local Government Administration and Leadership Management (Tanzania),” carried out with funding from KOICA, is based on a curriculum designed for officials from the country, which guided nine years of customized training from 2007 to 2015.

It was prefaced with an orientation conducted by the sponsor agency on Friday. On Saturday, the participants embarked on a study visit around Seoul Special Metropolitan City, making stops at Samsung D’light, Lotte World Tower, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, and Gyeongbokgung Palace.

As heads, officers, and secretaries from Tanzania’s President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, regional commissioner’s offices and secretariats, and district councils, the officials represent the first wave of participants in a tripart customized program that will take place annually over two-week terms. The goal of the newly developed program is to enable local government officials to deliver services efficiently, effectively, and responsibly, through reinforced administrative capacity. Objectives set out for each of the years include presenting direction for better governance and accountability and establishing a foundation for the local administrative system in Tanzania.

LOGODI President Park Jae-min formally welcomed the participants at Hotel President in Seoul, where they will stay for the coming several days before transferring to LOGODI in Wanju. In his welcome remarks, President Park recognized the 11-year partnership between his institute and Tanzania, which has produced 131 alumni from nine programs.

Tomorrow, participants will present case reports on the theme, “Linking Good Local Governance with Sustainable Development.” Presentations will share participants’ experience in innovative projects for education, the economy, and the environment. Just before completion of the two weeks in Korea, the participants are expected to present action plans developed over the course of their exchange, for application in their workplaces back home.

Certificates of completion for the program will be awarded to each participant at the closing ceremony, scheduled on September 18.
